Could Quality Fire Doors Have Prevented The Grenfell Tower Disaster?
Fire rated doors can save lives, and this has never been more evident than when assessing the tragedy of Grenfell Tower this summer. The high-rise tower block, which was home to 350 people in the London borough of Kensington and Chelsea was insufficient in providing fire safety. In 2012 a fire risk assessment showed that the fire doors within the London tower block would not provide residents with even 30 minutes of fire protection, which is the minimum time a fire door should be able to protect residents for.
Therefore, it was recommended that all internal and external doors be replaced with quality fire doors.
The report also claimed that many residents had neglected fire safety precautions by replacing their own front doors with decorative models instead of fire doors. Parliament was informed that there were hundreds of quality fire doors missing from the building, something which should have been resolved in safety inspections and risk assessments.
Fire rated doors are designed to deliver two main functions, they provide a defensive barrier from fire and smoke when shut and aim to reduce fire damage within the property, should such situation occur.
It is recommended that fire rated doors are installed in areas that are most at risk of fire, usually kitchens or rooms with a significant amount of electrical equipment. Modern domestic properties are subject to building regulations, stipulating when and where fire doors must be used. Most significantly when considering Grenfell, they are required in buildings which are three or more storeys high for every habitable room next to the stairwell.
How many lives could have been spared with the use of quality fire doors for use both internally and externally throughout Grenfell Tower? Had proper precautions been in place and fire doors made mandatory by the council who owned the building, could things have been different?
